Decade Energy, a leading European developer of power infrastructure for heavy-duty truck electrification, and Renault Trucks have inaugurated a new battery-backed charging installation at Renault Trucks Grand Paris - Gennevilliers.

Battery storage and smart software to optimize charging

The installation combines a 250 kW grid connection, a 110 kW / 220 kWh battery energy storage system, and a 200 kW DC charger equipped with two charging points for heavy-duty trucks. Operated by Decade Energy’s proprietary energy management software, the station optimizes in real time the use of electricity from the public grid or stored energy, based on electricity prices, charging demand, and site constraints.

The principle is simple: the battery stores electricity when conditions are most favorable, then makes it available to charge trucks according to the site’s needs. When it is not being used for charging, the stored energy can also contribute to the flexibility of the electricity system, further strengthening the infrastructure’s business model.

The current installation could supply around 140 MWh of electricity per year — equivalent to 140,000 electric kilometers driven by heavy-duty trucks each year.

Scalable infrastructure, without immediate grid reinforcement

The project also demonstrates how battery storage can increase the available charging power without immediately requiring grid reinforcement. In a second phase, Renault Trucks Grand Paris and Decade Energy plan to add a second charger and a second battery. Once this expansion is completed, the site will be able to provide up to 470 kW of charging power while maintaining the same 250 kW grid connection, thanks to the additional power provided by the battery storage systems.

“We are very pleased to see this installation come to life at Renault Trucks Grand Paris Gennevilliers. It is a strong example of what becomes possible when partners work together with a shared ambition: accelerating the electrification of road transport. Renault Trucks Grand Paris is helping pave the way by integrating this type of infrastructure into its sites and making it available to transport operators transitioning to electric, and we are proud that Decade Energy’s BESS, charging, and software platform can support this transition.”

– Alejandro Ortega Peniche, Co-Founder of Decade Energy

When the charging station is not in use, the battery can also generate additional revenue by participating in energy markets and providing flexibility to the electricity system. This dual role — supporting both fleet electrification and grid resilience — is at the heart of Decade Energy’s approach to energy infrastructure for accelerating the electrification of heavy-duty trucks.

Bringing together the heavy-duty truck electrification ecosystem

The inauguration and ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together 110 decision-makers from the transport, logistics real estate, energy infrastructure, utilities, and professional association sectors. The event included remarks from Olivier Metzger of Renault Trucks, a presentation by François-Xavier Thinet of Renault Trucks Grand Paris on the site’s electrification journey, and a demonstration by Alejandro Ortega Peniche on how battery energy storage can optimize electric truck charging operations.

Decade Energy would like to thank Renault Trucks Grand Paris and Renault Trucks for their contribution to bringing this installation to life, as well as Enedis, AXPO Group, Firalp, Sungrow, and Kempower for their essential contributions to the project.
