Meet the Team: Matthieu Stephant - Energy Analyst

Paris, France, Thursday 23 July 2025

Summary

  • Previously: Energy analyst at Aurora Energy Research and microgrid consultant in the U.S., with a PhD in electrical engineering.
  • At Decade Energy: Leads the energy market strategy, optimizing battery operations, developing flexibility services and turning market complexity into actionable products.
  • Why it matters: Matthieu ensures Decade Energy’s solutions are grounded in real market dynamics, helping logistics operators make smarter, future-ready energy decisions.

As the energy landscape transforms, so does the complexity behind every battery, truck and megawatt-hour. At Decade Energy, Matthieu Stephant is the one making sense of it all, bringing both analytical rigour and creative energy to the task of accelerating transport electrification.

We caught up with Matthieu to learn more about his background, motivations and what keeps him curious about the future of energy.

Power Markets, PhDs and a Passion for the Grid

With a background in engineering and a PhD in electrical engineering, Matthieu has long been fascinated by how power systems evolve, and how data, economics and infrastructure interact. His career spans multiple corners of the energy sector: from working at an energy retailer to assessing the viability of microgrids in the U.S., and later joining Aurora Energy Research, where he developed deep expertise in electricity market design, modelling and financing.

That mix of technical skill and market insight now informs his work at Decade Energy, where he’s responsible for shaping how batteries are operated, how flexibility is monetized and how our energy products are designed to serve both grid and logistics needs.

Batteries at the Heart of the Energy Transition

For Matthieu, the rapid evolution of the power system is one of the most exciting frontiers in the energy transition. As renewables proliferate and grids grow more complex, new services like load-shifting, ancillary services and flexible demand are becoming essential. Battery storage, with its unique characteristics, sits right at the centre of this transformation.

His previous work helped secure financing for large-scale wind, solar and storage projects across France, Spain and Finland; projects that demanded both precision and strategic thinking under pressure. That experience shapes his work today, as he ensures Decade’s energy systems are designed for long-term success.

Why Decade Energy, Why Now

Joining Decade Energy was a timely and intentional move. The electrification of transport is not only one of the most urgent priorities in the energy transition, it’s also one of the most complex. Decade’s integrated approach, combining energy storage, EV trucks, and, where possible, solar, offers a powerful solution to accelerate change.

“To my mind, this is one of the key challenges of today, in order to reduce dependencies on fossil fuels. The path will be long, but Decade Energy's approach pushes logistics operators and truck owners to act. I am happy to be part of a team that makes things move.”

At a time when price volatility, grid delays and geopolitical instability can slow investment, Matthieu sees Decade Energy’s model as a way to lower risk and unlock progress.

“We hear a lot about flexibility these days, but our role is to translate this general term into concrete and relevant solutions,” he explains. “To accomplish Decade Energy's vision and speed up electrification, many new services still need to be imagined and implemented. There are definitely many exciting challenges and opportunities to come.”

A Pragmatic Approach to Innovation

Matthieu’s work is grounded in rationality and scientific thinking. With a PhD researcher’s mindset, he believes in questioning assumptions, testing ideas and building solutions that make both economic and physical sense.

He’s particularly energized by the challenge of translating market dynamics into real-world outcomes, whether it’s dispatching a battery or helping a truck operator future-proof their operations.

Getting Creative Beyond the Numbers

Outside of work, Matthieu plays guitar in a rock band, a creative outlet that balances the analytical nature of his day job. Around the office, he’s nown for his autonomy, attention to detail and for always bringing positive energy to the team.

Whether he's untangling power markets or perfecting a guitar riff, Matthieu brings a thoughtful, steady and solutions-oriented spirit to everything he does.

At Decade Energy, that spirit helps keep the energy transition moving. One battery, one truck, and one smart strategy at a time.
