Meet the Team: Alejandro Ortega Peniche - Commercial Strategy & Co-Founder

Paris, France, Thursday 25 September 2025

Summary

  • Previously: Held global roles at AXA in Mexico and Paris, then built the insurance function at Volta Trucks to support fleet electrification.
  • At Decade Energy: Leading commercial strategy and building key relationships with transport operators, real estate owners and OEMs.
  • Why it matters: Grid upgrades are slowing electrification, Alejandro develops scalable solutions with battery storage to cut costs and unlock growth for our customers.

At Decade Energy, we believe the transition to electric logistics is more than just mobility, but about building systems that make this transition possible at scale.

Few people understand that better than our co-founder Alejandro Ortega Peniche, whose career has spanned insurance, mobility and now energy. With a knack for connecting strategy to real customer needs, Alejandro is helping shape Decade Energy’s commercial engine and push the boundaries of what electrification can achieve.

From Insurance to Electrification

Alejandro brings over 13 years of experience across electric mobility and insurance. He began his career at AXA Mexico and later held global roles at AXA in Paris, where he launched insurance offerings, led transformation programs and scaled cross-functional teams. Earlier at AXA, he also led the rollout of Computable Contracts in four countries, transforming how claims were handled by eliminating the need to read dense contractual documents. Most recently, he built the insurance function at Volta Trucks, ensuring that insurance products became part of over 65% of deals in 2023, exceeding targets and proving how customer-focused services can accelerate adoption of new technology.

His decade in insurance gave him a systems-level understanding of risk management, customer experience and product development, skills that are surprisingly transferrable to the energy and mobility space. “Insurance taught me how to think in systems and put the customer at the center,” Alejandro says. “Those lessons are surprisingly relevant to electrification, where solving infrastructure bottlenecks requires both structure and creativity.”

“With battery storage, we can cut through that complexity, reduce costs and even create new revenue streams for our customers.”
Turning Commercial Strategy Into Traction

At Decade Energy, Alejandro focuses his time on commercial development: shaping the offer, defining strategy and building relationships with transport operators and real estate owners. His leadership style is rooted in empathy, strategic thinking and cross-cultural collaboration, qualities that guide both how he works with the team and how he partners with customers.

He is especially focused on tackling one of the industry’s biggest bottlenecks: grid upgrades. Slow and costly processes are throttling the growth of electric fleets. “Grid delays are one of the main things holding the industry back,” Alejandro explains. “With battery storage, we can cut through that complexity, reduce costs and even create new revenue streams for our customers.”

Why Decade Energy, Why Now

For Alejandro, co-founding Decade was the natural next step. If electrification is to accelerate at scale, infrastructure needs to be simpler, faster and more cost-efficient. “We started Decade Energy because we shared the conviction that customer-first, scalable solutions were missing from the market,” he says. “To make electrification truly viable, you need to build for both economics and usability.”

He’s energized by the convergence of energy, mobility and software, and by the opportunities this creates for innovation, cost savings and entirely new business models. In his view, electrification isn’t just about vehicles, it’s about rethinking how renewable energy infrastructure operates.

Running On Trust and Trails

Authenticity, collaboration and continuous improvement guide Alejandro’s work on a day-to-day basis. His teammates describe him as energetic and always in a good mood, and someone who believes deeply in the power of trust and shared purpose. That same drive shows up outside of Decade Energy too: he’s a dedicated marathon and trail runner with a personal best of 3h26, and balances his endurance training with reading and journaling, that is, when he’s not busy parenting.
